Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day, and on this day I decided to share a post with you that I did in 2018, (all I added was the new squirrel collage that I made maybe a year or so ago, and a few other changes). Enjoy!
These photos were taken by me
when I was walking either Dakota or Levi
can't remember which!
I LOVE CATS AND DOGS. That being said there are a few other animals that I am somewhat obsessed with, and Squirrels would be on that list! In honor of today being Squirrel Appreciation Day I just had to show them a little love!!

I could watch squirrels for hours, scurrying here and there, striking hilarious poses, committing acts of thievery. In my eyes squirrels are ingenious, always busy, always planning, but I often wonder, do they truly REMEMBER where they put their nuts when they bury them in the ground?
As a child, I used to look at trees with "tree holes" and imagine that when the squirrels would go inside they would sit on the teeniest wooden chairs and eat their meals out of hollowed out acorns. Ok, I will confess, I STILL believe that!
My Angel Bobo had the luxury of living in a first-floor apartment that was situated next to the woods. His window had a window seat as well. Bobo used to spend HOURS in that window chittering at birds and crouching down low to "play attack" the squirrels. The squirrels seemed to relish cavorting and teasing him knowing they were kept safe by a pane of glass. The photo below (and I apologize for the quality, but I had to take a photo of a photo hanging on the wall in order to share this with you), was taken at my first apartment in Michigan, when Bobo and I moved here together in 2001. That apartment was on the second floor but had the type of balcony where it was still convenient for Bobo to watch his beloved squirrels).
Poor Angel Cody didn't have that luxury because while I am still in a second-floor unit, I am in a different complex, and this unit doesn't lend itself well to "squirrel viewing." Instead, I had chosen to let a couple of MY squirrels infringe on Cody's space. Poor Cody didn't love the intrusion at all.
At one point I was actively feeding the squirrels and got in trouble because what started as two quickly grew to over 10 eating at one time. A number of them took up residence in the "attic" or storage area above some units. They were freaking out a neighbor across the hall because they were running around late at night. Needless to say, I was ordered to stop feeding the squirrels.
Oh, to live in a cabin in the woods where I can feed them to my heart's content and sit, like a cat and watch them for hours!
I am pretty pleased with how this turned out. I am a fan of using gel pens much more than I enjoy using colored pencils, so that is what I used to color the squirrel. The only editing I used was a brightener to make it show up better on the blog.

And now, I would like to leave you with a little "Squirrely Advice."

There are some squirrel nests in the backyard trees and we like watching them out the windows. They know we cannot get to them.
ReplyDeleteThey are fluffy little beasties :) I am glad to hear that they are also tree planters!
ReplyDeleteI love them!!! FYI: come back TOMORROW!! xoxo
DeleteWe must admit that squirrels are cute, but we would much rather chase them up a tree when we find them in our yard. BOL!
ReplyDeleteThat was sure fun and it was a nice bunch of squirrely humor and wisdom! No wonder we're friends, you like squirrels and I'm a nut!
ReplyDeleteI sooooooooooooo needed that laugh!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!
DeleteWhat a fun post! Squirrels are so cute. We don't have many around here and I don't think any of my cats have ever seen one!
ReplyDeleteWe love squirrels, too! They visit our backyard every day, and we (Ava and Mom and Dad) enjoy watching their antics. :)
ReplyDeleteWe LOVE the squirrel post! It is purrfect! Our squirrels are still hibernating. And We want to thank you for the Happy New Year card. We LOVE the year of the Cat! keep being awesome! Purrs Marvelous Marv and Barb
ReplyDeleteWe used to get them stealing the birds peanuts, but Eric and Flynn kept them away. I don't think they realise Eric and Flynn are no longer here because they never came back.
ReplyDeletethat proves what great patrollers they were!!
DeleteWe used to have a lot of squirrels, but have not seen any here of late...I think they've learned that we have dogs...shudder. When the 'new crop' of bushy tails comes around B & D will be teaching them all over again.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile those squirrels that are living in our back woods are taking up residence in our old wooden shed...they made a hole in the bottom, and a fallen tree limb on its roof assisted them further, so now that shed is full of walnuts. They have enough for years in there, OMC!!
Your inside squirrels are very cute!
OMG that story about the squirrel stash of nuts in your shed is just too funny!!! And walnuts no less! They sure know what is good!!
DeleteI opened that shed up a few weeks ago to get something, and nearly had a heart attack...there was a red squirrel that I spooked, and he couldn't seem to find the way out, even though the doors were wide open...so I got my stuff, closed the doors and gave him back his peace and quiet, LOL!!! Wonder what will happen when we eventually remove that shed, we have a new one since last summer...right by our back door, and away from all the walnut trees in the back.
DeleteThis was pawsome, Roary and Levi, we're still waiting for the squirrels to come in our garden, we want to get nuts also😸Double Pawkiss🐾😽💞
