Cat Health: National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day #Cat2VetDay #TakeYourCatToTheVetDay

From the American Association of Feline Practitioners
catfriendly.com

In our house we are firm believers in "wellness visits", (going to the Vet for check-ups when all is fine, and not waiting for an illness or a crisis to present itself), and keeping up with NECESSARY vaccines, (if applicable!)  Since Cody is a senior kitty we have wellness visits TWICE a year, (March and October) and any other time we deem necessary.

Wellness visits are important because they can often detect problems that could be cropping up. By catching a potential problem EARLY it can help avoid some costly vet bills! Preventative care is important for humans and dogs and it is equally as important for our CATS!!!

We are  blessed that we go to:

 DePorre Veterinary Hospital
here in Michigan
 which is a:

(For a list of Cat Friendly Practices in YOUR area, click here)
As I mentioned we are proud that our Vet is a Cat Friendly Practice. While Cody lives with a dog and LOVES his doggy brother, many cats that visit the Vet may not live with a dog or they just do not like dogs. The second we enter our veterinary practice we are taken to an examination room that is ONLY used for cats. They even have cat toys in the room! It makes for a more relaxed cat which enables you to have a MUCH better visit/examination.

Poor Cody, as luck would have it, look what appeared in our inbox this week and it's only August!!!!

Dear Caren,

We hope things are going well for you. Our records indicate that it's about time we see Cody for the following:

Total Health Plus (10/01/2019)
1-Year Rabies Vac. Feline (10/04/2019)

You can request an appointment by calling us at 248-646-1669  during normal business hours or by clicking the button below.

We are happy that we get regular reminders from our Vet that arrive in a super timely manner so we can plan well in advance. Now, if you ask Cody, I think he would like them to be a wee bit LESS efficient!

FROM CODY: I thought that with everyone being so busy taking Dakota to the Vet a zillion times lately, that I was going to get a reprieve. No such luck!!

Don't worry kitties, this photo is from my archives, I haven't been to the Vet recently ("knock on a bowl of kibble") and I guess going there truly isn't THAT bad.  I guess I DO sort of like "Dr.Smiley" but don't you dare tell him I said so!!!

Happy National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day all!

  1. We just got one of htose cards, too...MOL! We will go sometime in September.
And yup, more if need be...Right now Pipo is doing pretty good, considering how sick he was a few months ago:)

  2. I'm actually going to the vet today for my annual health screening! Boodie is a bit overdue - my human needs to schedule a wellness visit for her soon.

  3. Going to the vet is stressful for both me and Mum. I scratch her, hiss at her and when I see the carrier I run and hide.

She tries to take me once a year for vaccines and check-up. It's harder for us because we have to take a cab as Mum doesn't own a car. And I don't like strange men in cars (and Mum doesn't either) but she does take me as she knows how important it is.

I hiss at the vet too.

    1. oh no Athena!! Tell Mum, if she doesn't already, she should leave your carrier out ALL of the time! We leave ours in the living room and Cody sleeps in it much of the time. It helps a lot! I never hiss at the Vet...never ever! Sending lots of love, Cody

  4. We are glad you like (in secret) you vet,Cody. It is important to visit the vet. This reminded our Mom that she needs no make our appointments soon. ***eye roll***We are like Athena--we run away and give Mom, and the vet, a hard time. We also need to take a cab sometime and THAT is an entirely different adventure. Purrs to you for a good day. Hope you and Dakota are doing OK.

  5. Our cats were with us at the vet a couple weeks ago. Bert loves going to the vet, and I think we should leave him there, but Mom says he belongs with us at home.

  7. We took our Little Bit to the vet each year for her wellness check and if she needed another visit we went then too. You have to take care of your babies.

Have a purrfect day, Cody. My best to your mom and Dakota. ♥

  9. The more cats you have, the more visits you make. Pet Insurance is a good answer for maybe one pet, but multiple cats and I feel it better to just take my chances, as it is too much $! We don't like going there, do we, but that's why we are in pretty good shape. Got someone going next week. Oh, well. Hopefully the last trip for this year. Good advice.

    1. we have pet insurance too.......but with having to meet a $500 deductible on separate issues........it adds up big time. We have already spent a fortune since May with Dakota :(

  10. Now that veterinarian's in Michigan are beginning to end their practise of declawing, I feel I have more of a selection to choose from, because I don't want any of my hard-earned funds going to one that harms cats!

    1. not the one my next door neighbor goes to. She just told me she just got a new cat and had it declawed. I nearly died. Don't get me started.

  13. I did take my Gooseberry (11) to his veterinarian today for a tumor removal. I hope the histopath results show it to be benign but I'll be nervous for a week until we hear.

    2. We had to redo his sutures on Saturday because he'd gotten out of his collar and pulled the original ones out during the night! Now he has staples and I've attached the collar to his harness so it will be even harder to get it off. Still waiting to hear about his results.

  14. We are all about this! All of our cats get regular checkups, from once per year to four or more times per year, depending on the cat/age/health concerns. We've caught some health issues early on because we've noticed subtle changes in behavior.

  15. That is great that your vet is a cat-friendly practice. I wish more places would do that. We go to a cat-only vet, so we don't have to worry about dogs in the waiting room.

  16. WHAT?!? You get your reminders by e-mail?! Mine come in the mail ... so I have the chance to lose them. My Momma never forgets though! ~Bear Cat

  21. Some floofy white cat is going in for her hyperthyroid blood test Thursday but she doesn't know it yet. She has to be tested every 6 months since she can't take meds for it due to allergies. She's not gonna be happy but it's for her own good! It's good it's not me too!
