Hi my furiends!!! It's Cody and as many of you already know, today is *******(Bring or Take) Your Cat to the (dreaded) Vet Day better known as Mom, Dad, "Dr.Smiley" and his evil assistant get a good laugh day at MY expense!
******* (According to Days of the Year it is "Take Your Cat To The Vet Day", catvets.com is referring to it as "Bring Your Cat To the Vet Day" the message is the same!)
This photo is from a previous visit to Dr.Smiley's Evil Laboratory Just for the record, Dr.Smiley and Gabby are really NOT evil!!! |
Well, this is ONE CAT who is NOT going to the Vet today, (Don't get nervous!! I AM going in September for my Wellness exam and my annual Rabies shot!!! )
Anyway kitties, if YOU want to avoid a trip to the Vet, let me tell you what I have done in the past to delay that dreaded trip! You can take these tips and apply them to your own house, or come up with better ones of your own!
TIP #1 BE OBSERVANT!!!
One day I was minding my own business, resting on a chair during the dark and quiet wee hours of the morning trying to drown out the relentless droning of Big Brother After Dark that Mom is obsessed with. My PTU (Personal Transport Unit for those who haven't been blogging long), is always kept in the living room with BOTH doors open. I will often slink into it's cozy, furry, blanket padded depths to get some much needed slumber. That night/morning something unusual happened. The rotund one actually moved off of the couch and closed one of the doors on my PTU. I WAS ON HIGH ALERT!!!! KITTIES! THAT IS A WARNING!! THAT MEANS YOU ARE GOING TO THE VET AND THEY ARE LEAVING ONE DOOR OPEN AT THE TOP SO THEY CAN
TIP #2 WATCH FOR A CHANGE IN ROUTINE!!!
Normally, every morning I am on the couch getting some much-needed rest, (I am already fed because Dad gets up early to feed Sheltie boy and I while Mom snores away.) Mom usually says good morning to Sheltie Boy and then forgets that I exist. Well, that day, after her usual morning greeting, Mom walked over to me and started petting me and cooing. Then, I heard her start telling Dad, "I hope he stays there, this will be MUCH EASIER." ONCE AGAIN, I WAS ON HIGH ALERT!!! "THIS WILL BE MUCH EASIER?" I KNEW WHAT THAT MEANT!!!! I strolled into the kitchen and figured if I showed Mom and Dad my ample belleh, (which they LOVE to pet), they would be so overcome with my adorableness that they would be distracted.
More talk followed...Mom said "Oh no!! He's off of the couch! He will soon disappear and I won't find him!!" I WAS OUTTA THERE!!!!!
TIP #3 BEGIN TO PUT YOUR PLAN INTO ACTION
Find the MESSIEST closet or room in the house and GET THERE FAST!!!!!!
Observe the photo above. My hiding spot of choice is in the messy closet that is in
I waited til I heard Mom say, "I don't feel like, stressing Cody or myself out today, I can't reach him when he is in Bobo's carrier, it's much too hard. I am going to reschedule his appointment. It's just a shot and it can wait."
MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!!!
Once I heard Mom on the phone with Dr.Smiley's evil assistants saying something about "being stupid because she forgot to barricade the closet", and I heard something about rescheduling, I waited til I noticed that the
YAY FOR ME!!!
FROM THE MOM: While Cody DID successfully sabotage a trip to the Vet that day, he was by NO MEANS out of the woods! He ended up going to the Vet at the end of that month!!! In our house we are firm believers in "wellness visits", (going to the Vet for check-ups when all is fine, and not waiting for an illness or a crisis to present itself), and keeping up with NECESSARY vaccines, (if applicable!)

Wellness visits are important because they can often detect problems that could be cropping up. By catching a potential problem EARLY it can help avoid some costly vet bills! Preventative care is important for humans and it is equally as important for our cats (and dogs!!!)
FROM CODY: Ok, so Dr.Smiley isn't really so bad, he is quite nice really, but I am not thrilled with being called overweight and getting poked, prodded and having a shot, even if I DO know how important it is. So kitties, what have YOU done to escape going to the Vet? Share YOUR tips because I can always use a few new ones!!
Oh and my FINAL tip for today?
KITTIES....WATCH YOUR BACK!!!!!!!!!!
Love, Cody
My human is very talented at faking us out - she grabs Binga and Boodie when they least expect it and shoves them in the carrier and off they go! Of course, with me, she just throws a harness and leash on me and I am good to go!
ReplyDeleteThat is EXACTLY what my Mom NORMALLY does! The mistake she made that day was TALKING. She had me on alert! Normally she will do exactly what you did!
DeleteVery timely advice!!! We heard rumors that we're getting our teeth done any time soon. Bah. Our human doesn't like going to the dentist herself either - why does she force us? We'll be on watch now. /Tessa and Kajsa
ReplyDeleteMOL, love the advice! We're lucky, the girls here are too cuddly to hide long, even when they know pills or vet visits are in the offing, and Leo isn't a very good hider..
ReplyDeleteTomorrow is our family vet check up day. Sophie is preparing to hide, and Bert is wanting to wait in the car so he isn't forgotten as he loves his vet visits! We dogs are split on the vet thing. Regular check ups are one key to a healthy pet!
ReplyDeleteI have to go to the V-E-T today, Cody. Isn't that horrible? Something about rechecking my impacted ear wax. But you know what? I don't fight my mom when it comes to going in the PTU. I wouldn't want to risk my current status as my mom's little angel, so I just let her put me in PTU. Don't worry, though, I give her the saddest eyes from in there to make her feel horrible. You should see Eddy, though. She brings out all the artillery when it comes time to get in the PTU. The rest of us kitties steer clear of her when she's being put in there, because she's scary. Purrs, Thimble
ReplyDeleteThimble you are an extremely good kitty for sure!! Hoping all goes well for you today! (My Mom gets that impacted ear wax herself, no matter how much she cleans her ears!) Oh I am good about going into the PTU.........once they get their hands on me MOL! MOL! MOL!! Love, Cody
DeleteCody, I'll tell ya. You may possibly remember all the trouble mommy had getting Admiral to the Vet. Admiral blogged about it. The last year she was with mom, she wound up going just about once a week. It was horrible as she was totally shrieking. It made mom cry as Admiral was so anguished. Mom used to just call and ask if a Tech could come and get her as she was deep under a heavy oak bed and impossible for mom to get. Thank goodness I don't do that to her. Mom will never understand what happened to make Admiral so frightened and anguished It was the worst thing she has even experience.
ReplyDeleteOh YES Mom and I DO remember about the trouble you had getting Admiral to the Vet! My Grandpa Bobo was the same!!! Bobo used to go under the bed too (but he didn't shriek), poor Admiral. I have never tried the bed trick before. Bobo was horribly frightened too. Poor babies. Love, Cody
DeleteGreat tips Cody! Our peeps haul us off to the Vet at any sign of something not being right!
ReplyDeletethank you! So, your peeps are alarmists like my peeps? MOL MOL MOL!!! Love, Cody
DeleteWhat a great post. Our babies need care and the vet knows what those things are. It's a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI linked this post to Awww Mondays.
Have a purrfect day, Cody. My best to your wonderful mom. ♥♥♥
thank you!! You are always such a sweetheart! We sooo agree about the Vet knowing what we need! xoxoxo
DeleteAwesome tips Cody! Because my sisfur Isabella gets car sick, our peeps now has the vet come to us. Totally messes up our avoidance tactics!
ReplyDeletePurrs,
Angel
Oh my word...that photo of Cody in the arms of the vet...looks like one more second and somebody was gonna get torn UP! Your tips are good, Cody...but The Hubby waits until subject cat is napping, then he grabs and bags! Totally unfair, but if I say a cat must go to the vet, The Hubby snaps to. Great post!
ReplyDeleteMOL!!!! The Vet made it unscathed lol!! "grabs and bags" LOVE it! That's what I usually do too. But...that day I made the mistake of TALKING about it first and Cody was on high alert!! Thanks so much also!
DeleteGreat list! I know Beau hates, hates, hates, going to the vet. Let alone... getting in his carrier :(
ReplyDeleteGood for you Cody. You found a nice place to avoid getting to see your vet...
ReplyDeleteI went to the vet some days ago. It was a real surprise for me. I was sleeping when somebody took me from the bed. 30 seconds later I was prisoner in a my carrier. So sad.
I hate going to the vet. Even if I love one of the vet.
Ronrons
Hisia
Why do they ALWAYS sneak up on his while we are sleeping? It's sooooooo rude! Love, Cody
DeleteOver the 11 years she's had me, Momma's perfected the routine. She gets the carrier out up to a week early ... right before the snatch, she closes all the doors to the bed and bathrooms (my "haha!!! you can't reach me spots" are in those rooms) ... and then she acts all casual as she walks up to me like she can't remember where she's going (I'm fooled into thinking she's just being an idiot ... again) and grabs me!!! Do I go easily? NOPE. By the time I'm in the carrier, she's huffing and puffing and just really needs to sit down for a few minutes ... if not take a nap ;) And then I howl the ENTIRE WAY there AND through the whole visit. She HATES taking me to the vet ... the only thing that motivates her is knowing she'd never forgive herself if something happened to me because the routine was just too hard/bothersome (and she's awfully stubborn and when it comes to my health ... she wouldn't give in for anything).
ReplyDeleteOMG YOU MADE ME LAUGH!!!! Tell Mama to keep the carrier out all of the time (if she is able to do that, it DOES help!) I cracked up because I walk around closing all of the doors etc too and I try to act all nonchalant as well before I do the "grabbing!!!" Now I AM lucky that Cody doesn't howl coming, going or AT the Vet (he only cried once and that was when he was super ill).......it is so funny what we all go through and the common threads are just amazing AND hilarious!
DeleteGood advice! However Lucy is quite the feral cat when at the vets office. So she has her checkups when she is getting her teeth cleaned ( she's asleep!)
ReplyDeleteI'm not being mean or anything, but just stating the facts. Since Sam lost her eyesight, it has been SO MUCH easier to get her in the PTU! Poor girl just doesn't know it's coming. Plus I got a soft one that opens on the top, and that helps so much. I can honestly say I don't miss the days of chasing a cat around with a towel and hoping like heck we don't have to reschedule the appointment! :)
ReplyDeleteAwwww you aren't being mean! Poor Sam. (Never tried the towel thing lol), I usually do the "sneak attack" on Cody....my Angel Bobo was another story, he would go under the bed. We have a carrier for Cody now that opens on the top and front (it's a Godsend!!!) Plus, we keep it out ALL of the time, EVERY DAY!
DeleteExcellent post. Joanie could have used these tips earlier today :)
ReplyDeleteThank you and OH NOOOO! Poor Joanie!!!!
DeleteYou are too clever Cody! It's so sad that many people don't think cats need regular care as much as dogs do. This is such an important day to remind people how quickly a small medical problem can become something really big if it's not caught early.
ReplyDeleteThank you and Mom and I could not agree with you more!! Kitties are just as important as woofies!!
DeleteGood tips for kitties Cody. What are the benefits of taking your cat to the vet weekly?
ReplyDeletethanks but who said anything about weekly visits?????? Hell no!!! lol
DeleteGreat post, Cody! It's pretty bad here. If I (the lady) grab Annie and quickly put her in the carrier that's already been sitting out for a few days, it works fairly well although Annie cries and it breaks my heart. I used to have my husband grab her and I'd be holding the carrier open. Well, she would pee on my husband from fright. I think that scenario, as quick as we'd try, would cause greater anxiety for her. Pierrot is easy.
ReplyDeleteCody, we don't like going to the vet either...but we know it's a necessary evil. And lately, it seems like we've all been spending way too much time at the vet.
ReplyDeleteI think cats are beautiful... However I am allergic to them so I can't get too close. I can imagine them not being too great at the vet, but then again, neither are dogs! I mean, who actually likes going to the doctor but at all?! (PS: I found you - he he)
ReplyDeleteHa!!! I am HONORED as well as FLATTERED that you found me!!!! You cutie, you!! Love you to pieces!!! Actually BOTH of my pets are super good at the Vet, (I am truly blessed!!) I am so sorry you are allergic to kitties, my BIL is too and he pays the price when he pets Cody!!! Thanks so much again for stopping by here, you are such a doll!!
DeleteCody - Lucy wishes she read this yesterday. So do I. We screwed up big time not taking Lucy to the vet regularly, relying on checkups from her uncle. We had to take her yesterday and it wasn't pretty. I can't believe how angry and violent he was.... Scary
ReplyDeleteJust left you a comment before I saw this, I am soooooooooooo sorry!!!! Don't beat yourself up!!!! Is her Uncle a Vet? (I don't remember!!) If so, there is nothing wrong with that. I am so sorry that she was so upset, I feel awful for you. I know it had to tear you apart ((((hugs)))
DeletePetcretary did NOT take me to the vet on the 22nd...it is unfurbro-the-younger's birthday on that day:) (He turned 25 this time around, OMC!!!)
ReplyDeleteI have my appointment in November...it will be a bad ending to petcretary's scheduled vacation time, MOL!!! This will be the furst time I get to go in the carrier all by myself...with no Minko...
How do cats know when it's THAT TIME? They are napping lounging relaxing, but when I return from fetching the carrier, it's as if I have no cats.... Cody's account is so funny!
ReplyDeletexxoo
Very good tips, Cody! Our cats go in annually, and we just had our very first vet visit with new adopted Woodrow!
