CODY UPDATE: Last night he ate A LOT without the appetite
stimulant. Came out and played and was much more bright and active. This
morning he ate his entire breakfast, lunch and snack with no stimulant. He was
bright, engaged and so much more like himself!
Went to vet and had a
PRELIMINARY, NON-FASTING re-check of his calcium only. His calcium is still
above normal, but it HAS GONE DOWN from last Saturday. Cody is going to have a
complete blood panel done either Fri or Monday (probably Monday).
My regular vet saw
him today, said he looks like he always does (a GOOD thing). There is a myriad
of things that could be the cause of what is going on. We are all taking it
step by step and there is a chance we won’t ever know what is going on (which
to me, is not a bad thing!)
Thanks to Jenna from Love is being owned by a Husky for the adorable card! |
The complete panel
will be mailed out when we have it done, so it will take some time to know some things and hopefully
rule out other things. Cody hasn't eaten since we got home about an hour ago. . I am not overly concerned because it was a stressful experience for him again, having to be poked and prodded. We have an appetite stimulant which I will only use
if needed. Today, he ate the majority of
his food so if he doesn’t eat tonight I will give it to him late tonight or
early tomorrow if he does not eat breakfast.
LOVE that my Vet is back to care for him!
Thanks to ALL for your love, caring and concern! I am
feeling much more hopeful!!
Will take each day as it comes, that's all we CAN do!

ReplyDeleteThat all seems like good news to me!
ReplyDeleteI'll have Oreo and Chewy keep crossing their paws for Cody to have a full recovery. Hang in there Caren. I know it is so stressful (and heartbreaking)when our babies aren't eating.
Purring for you every day, Cody!!!

ReplyDeleteGlad he is eating and acting more like himself! Purrs for a complete recovery.
ReplyDeleteIt's great to hear that Cody is feeling better. We'll keep purring for him and hopefully he'll continue getting back to his old self.
ReplyDeleteYou may not remember when Abby was sick, so was Boo. At the time, I had to concentrate on Abby before I could determine what was wrong with Boo.
ReplyDeleteSorry I am on the iPad and it is a little difficult to leave comments.Boo was finally diagnosed with hypocalcemia. Her calcium levels were very elevated. She had to have special blood test over many months. Finally, it just went away. Her last blood tests were normal.
ReplyDeleteOMG you have NO IDEA what your comment just meant to me!! Of course I remember Abby being ill, but I had forgotten COMPLETELY about Boo!!!! Did she have the same symptoms as Cody? Was there anything they advised that you do for her? OMG ...your comment means soooooooo much!!! THANK YOU!! <3
DeleteDefinitely purring for Cody.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear that Cody is eating. We will continue to keep him in our purrs and prayers. XOCK, Kitties Blue
ReplyDeleteIt all sounds very positive. Hopefully he continues to eat and act more like himself. Keeping good thoughts!
ReplyDeleteGlad he is eating and "normal" ;)
ReplyDeleteFeel better, precious Cody! Happy to hear that you ate today!
ReplyDeleteYay for the good news! We will be purring and praying for the complete test Later. And that Cody keeps feeling like being his sweet wonderful Self. Hugs and love to you.
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear da good news. Still sendin lotsa purrs.
ReplyDeleteAll in all, that is good news Caren. It doesn't sound like there is anything major going on anyway, and that's important. Purrs and prayers will continue until he's all better. He probably didn't eat tonight after the stress of being at the vet. Hope he gets back on track tomorrow without the stimulant.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much, we are hoping so. The Vet said exactly what Angel Abby said, that often in cats who have hypocalcemia, it isn't uncommon for them to not be able to find the cause. I am praying that that is the case, or if they find the cause, that it isn't the worst thing that it could be. He just came out from under the bed, (I think I accidentally scared him and petted him where he was sore from blood work), and he had taken off super angry (he never does that). He stayed under there for over 4 hrs. I laid down and talked softly to him a number of times, he finally came out a few minutes ago.
DeleteDood , I was under the bed two day after the last time I gotten sho at the v-e-t. Mom's forget we mancats needs our space sometimes to "work through it". Sounds like things are on the upswing... purrs are still rumblin'down from all of us up north. ~ Harry
DeleteHi Harry!! I most certainly DID forget that and I thank you for your most gentle reminder!!!!!! Thank you for the purrs, we need 'em! Love, "Mom"
DeleteSounds like Cody is improving. We'll purr for great test results.
ReplyDeleteWe're so glad Cody is eating and acting normal. That's a good sign. And we're purring that the new blood tests come back showing nothing abnormal. :)
ReplyDeletePaws crossed that Cody continues to improve!
ReplyDeleteWe'll take this all as positive, too. And we'll keep right on purring and praying and crossing our fingers and paws that this trend continues! :)
ReplyDeletePaw crossed & Purrs for you, Buddy !
ReplyDeleteKeep eating, Cody !!!
Because we all love you
xox
Continued purrs coming your way!
ReplyDeleteWe hope the test results show nothing serious.
FYI on the appetite stimulant that Katie used... I was only giving it to her when she seemed disinterested in her food. But after just a day or two, she'd reverted back and wasn't eating. My vet recommended I keep giving her the stimulant every 72 hours until they were all gone...whether she was eating or not. It seemed to work for us. You may very well be using a different stimulant altogether...but just wanted to share what we had done.
(((purrs)))
We are so glad to see an update and glad that Cody has eaten and it is encouraging that your regular Vet saw him today and had a positive take on it, we will be keeping Cody in our thoughts and prayers for his good health and appetite and good test results. Caren, now you need one of those so-called "adult beverages" too bad you live so far away or we'd bring our blender and mini-umbrellas over! Hugs to you...
ReplyDeleteI have been keeping up with Cody's updates and am glad to hear he is doing better now. I've been thinking of you Cody!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear Cody is improving. Hopefully he'll continue to feel even better.
ReplyDeleteHey Cody, we are just found out you weren't feeling well. We are glad to hear you are eating and feeling better. We are sending our bestest healing purrs and prayers your way.
ReplyDeleteMama here, I have had mixed results with appetite stimulants but still use them sometimes with the fosters. When the stimulants have failed I use Hill's AD, you can get it from your vet. It never fails to pick up the appetite. Hope your fur baby is better soon.
Kitty Kisses,
Cindi Lou & The Kitty Krew
Our purrs continue fur Cody!
ReplyDeleteLots of our loud meezer ones...
Now if only we can get Minko to eat on his own...he only took about three bites by himself...what on earth would make a kitty piglet like him be this way is beyond us...sigh...
Glad that Cody is doing some better, and pawyering that those tests will show nothing untreatable if anything.
Purrs!
Oh no!!!! Wait, didn't Minko just have a dental or something? (I might be confusing him with another cat, if so, I am sorry!) That is how we felt when Cody stopped eating. Cody is food obsessed so when he stopped eating I immediately was terrified.
DeleteHoping that by now Minko is eating!!! xoxo
He did have a dental on Dec 17, but this not eating started befur that...and continues...we are at wits end, but I can't stand by and watch him starve himself, so feeding is what I as kitty mommy do...
DeleteLabs showed possible pancreatitis, but we can not afford the other tests so we are just treating conservatively with diet.
Sometimes he may eat a bite, but it is far and few between. He despises the prescription diet, too...sigh...
When he eats he acts normal, plays and zooms around with Pipo, tries to elicit responses from dog-guy, etc.
He vomits once or twice a day, and sometimes not at all, no hairballs and fur some reason only if his stomach is empty...this scares me into thinking perhaps it isn't pancreatitis, but maybe the big C...OMC:(
He comes begging fur the noms, he just will not do it himself, the little rascal...well, he has gained a couple ounces since I got more diligent in feeding at least twice a day:)
Oh my!! I am so sorry! You have to be at your wits end!!!!!!! Poor little guy! I am purring and praying with all of my might that he will start to eat better!!!! Wish there was something that I could do!! ((((hugs))))
DeleteThank you so much...purrs and pawyers are coveted for his return to good health.
DeleteOops that was from us...MOL!
DeleteWe keep purring for you, Cody ! Purrs
ReplyDeleteGet well soon, Cody. I'll be thinkiing about you. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteStep by step is just purrfect . Healing Pawkisses sweet boy and one extra for your mom <3 <3 <3
ReplyDeleteCaren, Momma is here to apologize she didn't come over before...... She said she has been on a tight dead line...... Can you tell me how a dead line can be tight?
ReplyDeleteI am so Glad Cody is doing better! I hope the appetite stimulant you are giving is cyproheptadine..... Momma says to keep in mind that it takes about 12 hours to fully work - so if you give him in the morning, you will only see its effects at night. Also, that you should wean him off slowly - say you give him 1/2 tablet twice a day - then you need to give 1/2 in the morning and 1/4 at night, then 1/4 twice a day, then 1/4 only in the am..... You catch momma's drift. By your description, momma thinks it's the one you are using - she thinks it's the very best, and it's the one we use it too.
Not sure if you are aware, but Hypercalcemia can be caused by several things - one of them we don't realize is fertilizer poisoning. We don't know if Cody goes out to the yard...... Or if you even have a gardening service..... But this happened here in our home once - it took a little while to find out what was going on - but it happened only with the kitties who ate grass - Mac and Lucky, and it coincided with the new fertilizer I had requested the gardeners to treat my yard with (momma wasn't aware of the dangers at the time, she was told it was safe)
Once momma kept us indoors, cancelled the treatment and we had a nice strong rain to wash it all down, Mac and Lucky both got better.
Again we don't know if this is the case, just tossing ideas out there - if it is, it's an easy one to take care of.
Momma sends heaps of purrs....... Begs Cody to continue to eat...... If he doesn't eat, please assist feed him..... Hepatic Lipidosis is very dangerous and it can come in a blink of an eye.
Momma finds this site very helpful with assisted feeding, if you ever need - we will be purring it doesn't come to that. Feeding Techniques
If your cat will not eat on its own
Tons of purrs, hugs and love - and here is for a healthy New Year!
Hi my furiend! Yes it is cyproheptadine but he hasn't taken it since Monday at around noon. According to the directions, you take it every 12 hrs.....it doesn't take 12 hours for it to work. When they gave it to him at the emergency place Sat night, he ate VORACIOUSLY about an hr after. They said it LASTS for 12 hrs....we also were told to only give it as needed which is what we did. He no longer needed it after early Monday afternoon.
DeleteWell, the vet said that main cause is idiopathic (that you NEVER find out what caused it)...the other causes are usually thyroid, and God forbid Cancer. But, the vet said the main cause often remains unknown and that that is most commonly what they find. Cody doesn't go outside, (Dakota does).........with our weather, we are long past our grass being fertilized.
Please know that I DO APPRECIATE all that you mentioned to help, I THANK YOU IMMENSELY!!! xoxo
Continued purrs and purrayers to Cody -- this update is very encouraging, particularly that he's been eating on his own and that the vet thinks he looks good. Paws crossed that all will be well, that there's nothing too serious going on. And paws crossed for the full blood panel results.
ReplyDeleteOh are SO happy to hear that Cody is "back" and feeling better......also that his regular vet is taking care of him again which is a comfort. Apparently this calcium thing is NOT all that rare - and let's just hope that it was "just one of those things" that happens to our babies that comes then thankfully GOES! This is wonderful news to end the year with an start a new one with - we were SO hoping that all our friends would feel better to start the year. I know you're happy - so are we!!!! Sending continued purrs and prayers because we love you!
ReplyDeleteHugs, Sammy and Mom Pam
Thank you so much Sammy!!!!! Nope it isn't rare at all and the vet said that often they can't FIND the cause (which is what we are hoping!!!) We are holding on to that thought! Thank you so much for the purrs and prayers, we love you too!!! Caren and Cody
DeleteStay brave, C. You're moving in the right direction. xoxo
ReplyDeleteLove and licks,
Cupcake

ReplyDeleteEmma and Buster
so glad to hear the calcium has come down some and that he is eating without medication. Go Cody, keep getting better.
ReplyDeleteMy very best wishes and healing thoughts are with you and Cody today. Hope he continues to get and feel better. xo
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry I haven't surfed over before. I'm glad Cody is feeling better and I am praying for the sweet little guy. I'm not a veterinarian but just guessing, it sounds like it might be hypocalcemia. Discovering what caused it may be tricky and a cause isn't always found, if I remember correctly. Bottom line: please give sweet Cody a gentle hug from me. Aimee sends healing purrs.
ReplyDeleteDarlene Hi!! I am sorry I didn't see this sooner! YES you are EXACTLY right. The vet was referring to it as hypocalcemia too. He also said what you said that the Number one Cause is often "idiopathic" (which is what we are praying for)....Cody has been eating perfectly normally since Monday night....today he seems almost back to himself (wanted to play and everything).........he also was DEMANDING his meals/snacks which he hadn't done in a week! Thanks so much for confirming what our vet had said! HAPPY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
DeleteThat does sound positive! Keep eating Cody! Keep us posted about his blood panel. Hugs and love to all of you.

Love the graphic Jenna did. Does Cody vocalize with the apetite stimulant? I had to take one years ago and I walked around and vocalized loudly for almost a hour. Hope Cody continues to get better.
ReplyDeleteHi CK! I do too! Nope! Cody is actually vocal when he is feeling well and wants to eat, wasn't vocal at all while taking the appetite stimulant. We are thrilled that he has been eating WITHOUT the stimulant since Monday night! Tonight he even came into the kitchen meowing for more food after he had just finished dinner, THAT is the Cody that we know and love! xoxo
DeleteSweet Cody, we're still purring for you and wishing for a happier and wonderful 2015. Happy New Year!
