"Beary Good Stuff" Is Better Than "Beary Good!!!"

With Thanksgiving in the U.S. still fresh on our waistlines it is only appropriate that we continue our food fest and talk about some delicious products  from Beary Good Stuff which happens to be owned and operated by none other than Barb Kowalik (you know her best as the mischievous Nellie and Kozmo's Mom from  Cat From Hell) and her husband Dave.
You can visit her blog here!
A couple of months (or so) ago I was the incredibly lucky recipient of all of this!
The items we received from left to right:
Blueberry Garlic Jelly, Beet Horseradish Relish
and Tequila Jalapeno Jelly

Barb had quite the good luck streak going when she won prizes on BOTH of my blogs (Cat Chat and Dakota's Den). Neither she nor I could believe her good fortune!

As a  (completely unexpected and  unnecessary, but MUCH APPRECIATED!!) "thank you" Barb sent me jars of deliciousness as well as a sweet thank you note:

 This was created by Barb!!!

Her thoughtful "thank you" note
accompanied the box of deliciousness!

She even gave Cody a treat!
Noooo! It isn't what you think!
No Feds will be coming here anytime soon!
It's fresh, homegrown CATNIP!

The item we tried and LOVED
was the Blueberry Garlic Jelly!

It is their #1 Seller!
We used it as a marinade for turkey breast
and it was delicious!

The next two items we haven't tried yet,
but trust me, we will....SOON!

The Tequila Jalapeno Jelly was new this past summer.
Barb says that it's not too hot,
and that it  makes a terrific cheesecake!

The Beet Horseradish Relish
Barb said that this is an old family recipe.
She also says that It's not hot.

These items would all make unique Holiday gifts!
Some of my favorite gifts to give and receive
at the Holidays are "foodie" gifts!
The gift of food is a gift given with love!
They would also make wonderful hostess gifts!

To learn more about these and other products
that Barb has available,
you can visit Beary Good Stuff right here.

When you do, tell Barb and Dave
that Cody, Dakota and Caren say hi!!

Friday Fun! Cody And The Bug

This video was taken last summer. It isn't the best, but what I love about it is Cody replies  almost every time I ask "Where's the bug?"

Turn your volume up, my favorite part is when I say is it "up there?" and Cody's reply sounds as if he is saying "Yeah"

Have a fun Friday!

Book Review: "The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey, A Journey of the Extraordinarily Ordinary" By Deborah Barnes (And A Give-Away!)

How do I even attempt to complete a task as "ordinary" as a book review and make it "extraordinary?"

How do you take an act as simple and "ordinary" as reading a book and turn it into an "extraordinary" experience?

The answers to those questions can be found by reading The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey, an "extraordinary"  story which not only chronicles
Author Deborah Barnes' life, but the lives of two of her seven cats;  Zee, her adorable and lovable male Maine Coon and Zoey her female "wild-child leopard inspired Bengal cat, who fell madly, deeply in love." The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey is  the first (of what I am certain will be many) books by Author Deborah Barnes.

I was one of a few lucky individuals who was offered a "sneak peek" of Deb's manuscript this past summer. I had the additional honor of supplying a comment for the back cover:

"The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey are a treasure, simply enchanting, captivating and engrossing, both as a true story the author shares about her life with her feline clan, and as a visual masterpiece of stunning photographs and delightful artwork. They say animals are drawn to those who emit a "blue light" and Deb must have this aura radiating from her like a floodlight because she doesn't just WRITE about her love for her cats, she LIVES it as well. Because of this innate understanding she has for this beloved species and the trust they have for her; she is able to translate the most ordinary of everyday life events into a story that is nothing less than extraordinary!"

Webster defines the word "ordinary" as being "common, an everyday occurrence, unremarkable."

There are literally scads of books about cats on the market.  That in itself is "ordinary."

How does one take a common topic,  one's life with cats, and make it "extraordinary?"  Webster defines  "extraordinary" as  "going beyond what is usual, regular, customary." He defines it further as "exceptional to a very marked extent."

The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey ARE "exceptional to a very marked extent."

- What is the likelihood that you will lose your job after dedicating most of your adult life to it?

-What is the likelihood of turning that "ordinary" yet devastating experience into a life-changing extraordinary journey?

-What is the likelihood that a cat who is not one of the namesakes of this story being the reason this story exists?  That cat would be Deborah's beloved cat "Kit"  who as Deborah says "without her, this tale would surely never exist."

-What is the likelihood that you will have two cats living in your home who "fall in love" and proceed to have the most amazing kittens stirring in  YOU a feral, protective instinct and love the magnitude of which you would never have believed was possible?

-What is the likelihood that  your own life's story would run parallel to that of your cats? YOU  meet the "man of your dreams" (which translates to "he loves ME AND he loves CATS!"), and he is a photographic genius to boot?

-What is the likelihood of  "ordinary" acts such as watching the  The Ellen Show and learning about Oprah's "vision board"  resonating with you so powerfully that they  inspire you to begin to make monumental life changes?

-What is the likelihood of embarking on and completing the daunting task of writing a book about your life, replete with lessons learned, as a result of observing and making sense of the behavior  of your beloved feline family?

-What is the likelihood of writing  in such a descriptive, loving and insightful way that the reader feels your pain, laughs at some of your hilarious experiences,  gets into your head and can find parallels from your experiences and relate them to their own lives? Not only is this not very likely, it is an "extraordinary" feat.

Deborah Barnes in The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey has taken what to some would be an "ordinary" story and made it an "extraordinary" lesson of life and love.

This book isn't just a "book", certainly not, that would be  completely "ordinary."  This book  is a sumptuous banquet. It is a banquet that will stimulate  your senses.

You will love the feel of this book, it is an ample size, the paper is of superb quality. I am not and never will be a Kindle girl. I need to delight in the sensation of holding  a book in my hands. I even find comfort in the the smell of the paper a book is printed on. The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey more than satisfy those senses.

You will love the look of this book. When I received mine I literally and audibly gasped in awe and delight. It is simply breathtaking. You will be hard pressed to find anything like it.  There are literally hundreds of  Disney-worthy, art museum quality photographs lovingly and masterfully created by Deb's fiancee, Dan Power.

Each page is bordered by artwork that is both erethral and  whimsical, giving this "real life" story a "fairy tale" flavor. The pages are  simply stunning and captivating,  they are  the brainchild of Deb but superbly executed by Bright Pink Studio. This isn't a book that you will  relegate to the bowels of your bookshelf. It is a book that will wrap itself around you like a warm afghan, it will satisfy your soul while luring you into it's depths of captivating images and literary brilliance, it is a book that GIVES as much as you will want to savor and share it again and again.

That in a nutshell is The Chronicles of Zee & Zoey. And THAT, my friends, is "EXTRAORDINARY"

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Deborah Barnes currently resides in South Florida and after an unexpected life changing event, she decided to follow her dreams of becoming an author and used the relationship of her cats as inspiration for her first book. She also writes the popular blog, Zee & Zoey's Chronicle Connection, that is a collection of beautiful photos, artwork, and heartfelt stories about her feline crew." You can also visit her exquisite website here.

You may browse The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey,  better yet, you can PURCHASE the book HERE

You may buy The Chronicles Of Zee & Zoey on Amazon but if you purchase directly through Deb's site (click HERE ) you will receive your book beautifully wrapped in custom leopard tissue wrap, you will also receive  a Zee & Zoey sticker and a bookmark!   Deb will also provide an inscription,  a personal and keepsake touch, especially if you are presenting the book as a gift!

Book Review: Hannukatz Saves Hannukah (Well, at least for the Moskowitz Family) by Terry Abrahamson And Hannukatz The Musical!! World Premier On Stage!!!

It's that time of year again. Actually it has been "that time of year" since about August....when holiday decorations started to adorn retailer's shelves...and by "holidays" I am not talking about Halloween or Thanksgiving....I am talking about the December holidays of Hannukah and Christmas.

Community pools had yet to be drained for Labor Day, Halloween candy hadn't even been handed out, Thanksgiving menus weren't even a glimmer in our eye and yet "when what did my wondering eyes did appear? " holiday decorations! The retail blitz had begun. It is the official kick-off of  "Gimme Time!!"

The first of the holidays that will appear this December is Hannukah (the first night of Hannukah 2011 is December 21st, got your shopping done yet? No? Better get crackin')

One thing I strongly urge you to add to your "eight crazy nights" is "Hannukatz Saves Hannukah, (Well, at least for the Moskowitz Family)" the zany, off-beat and hilarious book which was written and hysterically illustrated by  the equally zany, off-beat, hilarious (and brilliant in an avant garde kinda way) Terry Abrahamson. This book addresses the problem of commercialism and greed in our kids  in a wry, witty and fun way.

Meet The Moskowitz's:

Mom "Sylvia" "Syl" to all who know her well who "sold obsolete Roll-O-Files where people used to store phone numbers before cell phones and computers" ('nuff said)

Dad "Gilbert" "Gil" to all of us "who dreamed of creating a new Kosher food called Chish (1/2 chicken and 1/2 fish) which would enable him to make a fortune.

The Kids "Emily" and "Josh" who "you always knew what holiday was coming when Josh and Emily put on their "I Hate Hannukah Shirts" which they wore because their parents couldn't afford the really, really "cool" gifts that they really wanted. I think we all know a few "Emily's" and "Josh's" (evil snicker)

"Josh" illustrations by Terry Abrahamson
In my opinion they both needed a good "potch on their tuchas" that is until the arrival of the main character...

Hannukatz! (a cat wearing sunglasses and as he calls it a "Meowmulkah", that possesses the wisdom of the ages and is one cool cat!) Read how he teaches Emily and Josh (in his own inimitable style), that "Hannukah is not the Jewish Christmas" and that the true meaning of Hannukah is not evidenced by how expensive and hip the gifts they  receive are.

You will also learn in this wonderfully wacky book:
  • the story of Hannukah as only Hannukatz can tell it
  • how the miracle of the "eternal light" inspired the Beatles song "Eight Days A Wick" 'er "Week"
  • and....if Emily and Josh will let go of their greed and if they will REALLY learn the true meaning of Hannuka.
HANNUKATZ COMES TO THE STAGE!!!!

So, after you have enjoyed your latkes and  after the candles from your Menorah have burned out (which nowadays due to the cheap candles that are made it takes about 30 seconds), and the kiddies are tucked into bed...enjoy a laugh from Hannukatz!

From our house to yours as Hannukatz says "Happy Hannukah to all and to all, a good light. Well...eight lights, actually"

As Terry Abrahamson says "Rock on, kids. Thanks for reading."

"They're Gonna Put Us In The Movies" Wordy Wednesday

Well, Well! I was unable to attend the Anipal Academy Awards 2011 (Sponsored by BlogPaws), due to being busy all weekend celebrating my sister-in-law's birthday, (it was a milestone birthday, the number will remain unmentioned! lol) But it appears that "while Mom was away,  the "Boyz" had their day!"

Cody and Dakota sure didn't want to be left out of the festivities!  (They were both nominees in various categories of the Photo category!) Here they are, "stylin'  " Photo and suits designed by The House Of Mario (from Mario's Meowsings. If I am wrong on whom I am crediting will someone please let me know?) My "boyz" said they had a great time flirting with all of the lovely ladycats and dogs!

A HUGE thank you to Mario for "dressing" my studly looking sons!
 Too bad they're NEUTERED!!!

Book Review: "The Confessions Of A Catnip Junkie" By Allan Goldstein

When you are feeling introspective, reflective, re-living moments of your life that might be objectionable, full of adventure or  daring, do you ever feel that the person you are today is a totally different person than the one who had those experiences in the past?

You know it was you who lived those moments, but now, let's say some 10, 15-odd years later you are older and  wiser, you are more content with how things are.  You are less inclined to mess with a "good thing" and risk danger in order to find your proverbial "heart's desire" located "somewhere over the rainbow."

While reading The Confessions Of A Catnip Junkie I was  reminded of the classic, The Wizard Of Oz. The Wizard Of Oz's message that "sometimes when we go searching for our heart's desire, we find that it really was right here all along, in front of us, right here in our own backyard" is one of the main points of this book, but in this story you aren't  "following the yellow brick road" to find it. You are joining Doo Doo Cat who is:

"witty and wise, sometimes foolish, always real and often hilarious. Doo Doo Cat is the best traveling companion you'll ever have. He promises to take you so deep in the the soul of a cat you'll feel yourself purr."

"Doo Doo tells his story in his own voice, we see what he sees, feel what he feels. His adventures will seize your imagination and touch your heart in ways you never thought possible, because you're not a cat. But Doo Doo is. And he promises to take you so deep inside his soul you'll feel yourself purr."

The Confessions Of A Catnip Junkie"  as narrated by Doo Doo Cat is brilliant.    Doo Doo is a delightful mix of sarcasm, intuition, snide humor and  insight.  He is a loving,  ("but don't get TOO emotionally- attached- to -me") orange tabby, who although greatly loved by his "people", (Doc and Fern),  escapes to find his "heart's desire" and adventure heading to parts unknown. Doo Doo blames his desire to escape his comfortable and loving environment on his having been  fueled by the intoxicating scent of catnip (or was it really just the foolishness of being a young cat?)

Doo Doo embarks on a 6000 mile odyssey where he meets characters who to me, were again reminiscent of characters in The Wizard Of Oz.

There is Kathy, (aka The Good Witch Glinda), Edgar (one of the wicked witches of the west),  Charlie and his "rickety airplane" (the Wizard and his hot air balloon), Rass (Toto) and a host of others who are all instrumental in helping Doo Doo to define not only who he is, but who he will become as a result of his arduous  journey.

In The Wizard Of Oz, Dorothy's  journey began as a result of  a cyclone.  In The Confessions of a Catnip Junkie, " Doo Doo's adventure is blamed on the effects of catnip. The intoxicating, sheer bliss inducing, seductive and "I'm-not-responsible-for-what-I-might-do" effects of catnip.

Could my interpretation of this book be the result of MY past, succumbing to the seductive scent of bagged greenery with effects akin to catnip? I'll never tell, that was a long time ago and like Doo Doo, I am a different person now than I was then.

In reality it is being young that causes wanderlust. Whether it be an orange tabby or a young adult experiencing these "coming of age" feelings, those of us who are of a "certain age" can relate.   Youth often brings  cocky confidence,  the contradiction of wanting to be loved  by our parents yet rebelling against them.   Being young often brings with it a  longing to spread one's wings, to be free of  physical constraints,  to assert ourselves, experience life for ourselves, to fall and pick-ourselves-up by using survival skills we learn along the way.

When we are young we often practice  "loving and leaving" when things become too intense and claustrophobic for our liking.  We  resist the safety of the familial cocoon.  We fail to realize  that we really are attached  to the cocoon by a  thread which never unravels but gently tugs at our hearts reminding us, leading us back to what we had all along. The safety and security of home.

Doo Doo's adventure made him become "very lost, but not so lost that he doesn't know what he wants more than anything. It's the same thing we all want-- love and home --"

Ultimately there   is "no place like home". Sound familiar?

MY OPINION OF THIS BOOK: It is now one of my favorites. I read it in one night beginning  at around 7:30pm and as author/blogger extraordinaire Ingrid King said in her review of this book, I, too COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. That isn't the norm for me.  I tend to have a short attention span. Not in reference to this book. I read it until I finished it,  at about 1:30 am. It IS THAT GOOD.

It is full of suspense, humor, action, adventure and warm fuzzies. Goldstein does a superb job of taking "everything that makes a cat, a cat" from its movements, fears,  habits, likes, dislikes, talents and  thoughts (if we REALLY know what cats think),  and conveys them through words that reflect an  inherent understanding of the feline that is unsurpassed by many.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Allan Goldstein lives in San Francisco with his wife, Jordan, and a minimum of two cats. He also blogs regularly on opednews.com, and on hypocrisy.com under the pseudonym Snark Twain. He is currently at work on his third novel. You can read most of his published writing on his website, allangoldstein.com. Want to know about Doo Doo? When you purchase this book (and you SHOULD) be sure to read the "About The Author" section in the back, but not until you have FINISHED the book!

The Confessions Of A Catnip Junkie is available on Amazon.com both in the Kindle Edition  and in paper back.

I was not compensated for this review. I was sent The Confessions Of A Catnip Junkie to read/review. All opinions are my own.

NATIONAL ANIMAL SHELTER APPRECIATION WEEK November 6th thru November 12th

"Show some love to a local animal shelter or rescue group"

In honor of National Shelter Animal Appreciation Week (sponsored by the Humane Society of The United States),  we have pulled out a guest blog that was written by  volunteer Cristin Hipke of The Abandoned Animal Rescue of Michigan (AARM) on September 10, 2010. We have chosen to honor Cristin and the countless shelter volunteers who work tirelessly  in their quest to save the lives of  abandoned pets and selflessly help them to find their "forever homes."

To Cristin and EVERYONE who volunteers in the name of the animals, we say THANK YOU!

For ways that YOU can become involved this week, click here

Abandoned Animal Rescue of Michigan (AARM) is a no-kill pet haven that has been operating throughout the greater Detroit metro area since 2004.  AARM is an affiliate of Guardians For Animals (GFA).  Our founder is very proud of this affiliation and always points out that "we are all doing the same work and are in this together."

Our mission is to help homeless or abandoned animals by giving them medical care, a safe place to rest their weary heads while enjoying good meals, and a chance to finally find the warmth of loving companionship. Our rescue efforts focus primarily on cats and dogs.  A selection of our cats that are available for adoption are in the Canton, MI Petco.

To this day, there is virtually no counting the number of animals AARM has saved and found new forever homes for. One such cat, Sweetie(currently in a foster home), walked up to the Palace of Auburn Hills and proceeded to “explain” through a complicated combination of voice and body language that she was home and demanded to know why she wasn’t being let in. Thankfully the security staff called AARM, allowing us to save this sweet, stubborn purrer.
Sylvester
Sylvester, an AARM super star alumnus, is exceedingly fortunate to be alive at all. Brought into a vet hospital, scared, bleeding, both hips broken, AARM stepped up to the plate, with the help of GFA, to fix his hips. A few short months after his recovery, after diligent work to restore his faith in people and reduce his fear of wide open spaces or loud noises, Sylvester gladly jumped into the arms of his forever parents, purring and head butting the whole way.

AARM has many vital volunteer positions open, from hardworking cage cleaner, adoption event volunteer, dog walker, or foster home, to communication and fundraising positions. AARM also accepts donations, which can be left with cashiers at the Canton, MI Petco.

Please contact us by Facebook, Twitter, or email.

Friday Funny

Today's post isn't about cats.

This post is about one of many ridiculous emails I receive on a regular basis. This one in particular has to take the cake.

Should I reveal the sender of this post? Probably not, but if they are intellectually challenged enough to send it to me then  being in the snarky mood that I am in, I have the right to display it,  in all of it's glory.

Enjoy!

Yep you read correctly! The email is about "Janitorial Services"

Here is my response. Sadly, I accidentally deleted the original that I REALLY DID send to "Mr. Martin". This is a reasonable facsimile thereof:

Dear Mr. Martin,

I suggest before you grab links and just write to them at random, that you do your homework and READ the content that is housed on the links you have chosen to solicit.

I have a CAT BLOG. The link you are writing to is a CAT BLOG.

Are you interested in joining me during my day that involves scooping industrial sized cat turds from the litter box?

Have a hankering for picking up dog poop from our courtyard?

No? I didn't think so.

Welcome to my world.

Peace Out.

Caren Gittleman

Needless to say I did not receive a response.

Warning to those who contact me and have no clue as to WHO or WHAT they are contacting. If you approach me with stupidity, please be prepared to accept what you will receive in return.

The human equivalent of a hiss and claws poised and at-the-ready.

So,  this  post REALLY WAS about CATS after all!
